Targets resources
The targets resources are defined in the User Defined Collections (UDC) editor.
If you used the Insights configuration assistant, two targets resources (UDCs) were created for you – AccountTarget
UserTarget
If your sales targets are per user or per account, then you don’t need to change the UDCs.
Note that there are cases where you want to modify or create the target resources yourself, for example:
- If you did not use the configuration assistant
- If you need additional fields as part of the target, for example if you need the target to be by the user and brand.
Manual UDC creation
If you did not use the insights configuration assistant, or if you want to keep the original UDCs as is and define additional target UDC (such as by user and brand), follow the following steps:
- Open the Configuration \ User Defined Collection and click Add.
- Define the collection key (unique name) and description. Make sure the key starts with a capital letter and that it has no spaces or special characters.
- In the ‘Inherit Field From’, select either the user_target or account_target.
This will define the base fields of date, user/account and target, and will also show this UDC in the target data editor as defined below.
- Leave the ‘Scheme only’ checkbox unchecked and click ‘Create’.
- After you click ‘Create’, the UDC will be created with the default fields and the editor will be opened, so you can add additional fields, such as Brand, category, etc.
Note:
- Make sure the field 'Key' starts with a lower-case letter and that it has no spaces or special characters.
- If you need to use the additional fields in the Insights module data queries, then you need to mark them as ‘Indexed’.
- If you changed the structure of the UDC after it had data, then you need to reindex the data. You do that by selecting the UDC (in the UDC list screen) and selecting ‘Rebuild index’ from the pencil menu.
Once you are done adding fields, simply click on ‘Update’.
Targets manager (data editor)
The targets manager will show you all the target resources in separate tabs across the top.
Go to Settings -> Insights -> Targets Manager
Per each resource, you can view, create or edit the defined data.
Targets Data Queries
A target data query is the same as any other data query. See Data Queries for Insights for all the basics on query creation.
- Create a new Query and choose the target as the resource. In this example, UserTarget resource is selected in order to create a query to be used in a benchmark chart showing Sales Reps Monthly Sales Actual VS Target for all reps assigned to a manager.
2. Choose the value format as Currency or Decimal, as needed. The default currency will be used, unless indicated otherwise:
3. Define the series:
Sum the Target field in the UserTarget resource. You will indicate the date range in the filter below.
For managers - group the values by User Name (to see targets per rep).
For individual reps, create a separate query and do not "group".
4. User Filter
For managers - "All users", or "Users under my role" (if you are using the Role Hierarchy definitions).
For reps - "Current User" (you'll need to create 2 queries, one for each role with the relevant option selected).
5. In this example we will filter the date by "This Month" in order to view this month's targets per rep in the chart.
"Date" corresponds to the date column in the UserTarget resource. Each entry has a date associated with it, for the purpose of filtering for the aggregation in the query.
Click "Add" and preview values will be shown. Ensure that these values are correct.
Targets in Charts
Target queries are usually used in scorecards or benchmark charts on dashboard pages. Build dashboard pages using the Page Builder and publish the pages to the relevant profiles - see the Page Builder Guide.
Benchmark charts support two queries – a query for the actual value and a query for the benchmark (or target) value.
To view the example above on a dashboard - add a "Benchmark Chart" block to the Page in the Page Builder.
In the Content tab, select the two queries to benchmark:
Manager Rep Sales this Month
Manager Rep Targets this Month
Data import
You can import the target data from a CSV file using the API or from the UDC data editor (open the UDC list and click on the UDC name). Then click on the menu icon and click ‘Import’.
The file structure can be a JSON or CSV.
If you use a CSV and you wish to import the account by the external ID value or the user by the email value, then the CSV title should include the ‘Account#ExternalID’ or ‘User#Email’ respectively.
